Abstract

Douady and Hubbard have introduced the concept of polynomial-like mapping. The Straightening Theorem establishes a conjugacy between these mappings and actual polynomials. The proof of the theorem uses "cut and paste" surgery. Understanding the use of this technique is the scope of the talk.
