Jorge Sotomayor

Jorge Manuel Sotomayor Tello was born in Lima, Peru on March 25, 1942, and died in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on January 7, 2022.

He earned his doctorate at the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), Rio de Janeiro, in 1964, under the supervision of Maurício Peixoto, with the thesis entitled "Estabilidade Estrutural de Primeira Ordem e Variedades de Banach".

Between 1965 and 1969, he taught mathematics in Peru and the United States. In 1969, he joined the IMPA research team, remaining there until 1992. In 1993, he became a full professor at the Instituto de Matemática e Estatística of the Universidade de São Paulo (IME-USP). He maintained the link with that institute until his death. From August 2012 to July 2014 he was also a visiting professor at the Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI).

Jorge Sotomayor contributed to the development of the Bifurcation Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations and the Qualitative Theory of Curvature Lines, always with the originality that was peculiar to him. Among the published books, “Lições de Equações Diferenciais Ordinárias” is considered a reference book in graduate courses in Brazil.
