Memorial day in honor of Jorge Sotomayor
Jorge Sotomayor passed away on January 7 of this year. Next March 25 we would have celebrated his 80th anniversary with him. We have chosen this important day to organize this event, to honor his memory and his work, but above all his good work, his character, and his friendship. Because more than a colleague or mentor, for those who had the honor of knowing him, he was a great friend.
ÚLTIMAS LEMBRANÇAS (Written by Marilda Sotomayor, March 2022)
- “Sotomayor is certainly one of the pioneers of the modern theory of bifurcation, put in the context of the theory of Dynamical Systems.” Maurício Peixoto
- “The origin of bifurcation theory, as a branch of differentiable dynamics, is generally attributed to Poincaré, the father of dynamics. The current emphasis -on the relationship between bifurcations and structural stability- emerged in Andronov and Leontovitch. The theory assumed its modern form during the 1960s, especially in the work of Sotomayor.” Abraham and Marsden, Foundations of Mechanics
- “Sotomayor, together with C. Gutierrez, put the concept of structurally stability in the study of the foliation determined by the lines of principal curvature of an ordinary surface in R3.” Maurício Peixoto
