Abstract

A model of the distortion energy of a diffeomorphism between compact Riemannian manifolds will be introduced and the minimal distortion diffeomorphisms will be determined. A much more difficult problem is to determine the diffeomorphisms with minimal bending energy. Partial results on this problem will also be discussed. The motivation for this research is applications related to minimal morphing of images and elastic materials.
